Respiratory syncytial virus

RSV is a common respiratory virus affecting people of all ages. It typically manifests with cold-like symptoms such as a runny nose, cough, and fever. However, it can lead to severe illness in vulnerable groups, causing conditions like bronchiolitis and pneumonia.

Certain individuals face a higher risk of severe RSV infection, including babies under 6 months old (especially premature infants), adults over 75 years old, people with weakened immune systems, and those with chronic lung or heart conditions.

Symptoms of RSV

RSV symptoms often appear a few days after infection and include:

• Runny or blocked nose

• Sneezing

• Cough

• Tiredness

• High fever

• Irritability and reduced feeding in babies

In severe cases like bronchiolitis, symptoms may worsen to include rapid or labored breathing and difficulty feeding.
